There must be a turf war going on against the San Clemente surfers and Newport as we have just found this written on the Lower’s trail. We have sent a warning to the Newp’s crew about this and they are really worried what will happen the next time they attempt to surf Lower’s. We contacted lifetime Newp’s local Josh Hoyer and this is what he had to say, “can’t we all get along”. SC locals we suggest you stay in school and learn to spell.

Dane Reynolds Signs With Campbell’s Soup
You have heard everything else, but you probably haven’t heard that one yet! Well Dane is currently the latest most talked about surfer in the surfing industry where everyone is wondering who he will sign with next. His contract must be coming up soon with Quik as the cat’s out of the bag and everyone has spoke or wrote about it. We have heard companies that are in the fight vary from Van’s, Insight, RVCA and of course Quik. Here Dane sits down with a nice warm cup of campbell’s soup and a grilled cheese sandwich to ponder what his choices are. We must pat ourselves on the back as we noticed Dane’s talents when he was in his teens bringing him on his first surf trips to Indo, South Africa, and Mexico. “Dane, will you go on another trip with us soon”, oh wait we have to go through your agent nowadays.
Kelly Slater’s First Sign Of Retiring
Say it aint so! Is this the first sign of Kelly telling the world that he is retiring. Kelly sporting the headband with the words “SEMI-PRO” on them. Quiksilver Europe’s team manager Stephen Bell sits next to Kelly pondering what is Kelly doing? Kelly decided to wear the headband in his next heat which he won as well as to go on and win the Hurley Pro contest. Whatever you decide to do Kelly is what we would like for you to do. You owe the world nothing as you have done so much for yourself, the surfing sport and carried America to 10 world titles!

Surfin’ USA – Not Fun
The Beach Boys sure made surfing sound fun when they come out with “Surfin’ U.S.A”. Now everyone’s surfing but nobody can catch a wave to themselves. Kelly, hurry up with that Kelly Slater wave pool the surf world needs it fast!

Taj Burrow Surf Groupies
Down at Lowers Taj was not very amused by the two girls that brought down granny pannies to the beach during the wct contest with the words “I love Taj” on them. We know Taj has so many girls throwing themselves at him, he just passed on these two. For now ladies keep updated with Taj’s whereabout at tajburrow.com
Lake Hodges Over Flows – Tribute to Galen Rowell
Yesterday the dam at Lake Hodges began to overflow which is very rare. We got up early today and did are best to document it. It was funny because thinking back to watching a video (Following the Light) in our high school photography class was on nature photographer Galen Rowell. Galen would wake up really early and seemed to always be running down a mountain or trail chasing rainbows, flowers, waterfalls, etc. We wish Galen could had been there today to teach us some tricks. Sadly Galen and his wife Barbara were killed in a plane crash in 2002 coming home from a photo workshop. One of the most inspiring photographers you are Galen, we will never forget you!

Photographer Jack English And The Sigma 300-800mm F5.6
So how this all come about with you and Sigma hooking up
I just got an email one day and they asked if I would be interested in collaborating with them.
What did you get
I got around 6 lenses. They just said take your pick and I went for the most variety of lenses I felt that would able me to supply them with a vast selection of images. I got a fish eye, wide angle zoom, 100-300 f4 medium zoom, 300-800 f5.6 large zoom and a few others. All brand new and valued around $20,000.00 as well as money on the side.
Wow, that is really good and what did they get
They received images for advertorial use promoting there products. The ads will be used in various photo magazines around the world.
Did you shoot all surfing with the gear
No, I shot horse jumping, skateboarding, go-karting, modeling, tennis, motocross and more. They wanted a wide variety of things, but I would say shooting the surfing with the 300-800mm was the most exciting.
Where and who did you photograph with that lens
I chose to shoot Malibu knowing how the wave starts to break so far out the back and ends up all the way to the shore. That lens is made for a break like that and also I wouldn’t mind having that lens for Jbay, South Africa. I phoned up longboarder Alex Knost and he agreed to work with me on this project. I was really happy to work with Alex knowing there is know one better. Alex would catch the wave at third point and end up on the shore, but having that zoom I was able to keep him completely in frame.
What was your favorite part of the Sigma 300-800mm lens
I would say having that much play with the zoom. Like when you shoot with a fixed lens at that length there is nothing you can do about it when the subject comes closer to you, but with this lens I was able to nail it all the way to the shoreline.
Any negative feedback
I have nothing negative to say about the lens on the way it works, all positive. The only problem I had was the lens hood never seemed to stay on real tight and when I would carry the lens in the bag it came with (being the lens is so long) it would touch the ground when I carried it. I am 6’2 which is tall, and for a lens that is being carried to hit the ground was kind of a annoyance. So I always had to carry it around my shoulder using the shoulder strap, but other then that I was pleased.
Any other shoots that stood out besides the surfing
I would say the go-karting was really cool. I photographed this one kid on a professional go-kart track in the dessert. He would be going so fast around these corners and I was laying down on the ground just feet away from him. He was a professional go-karter so I had complete faith in him to hit his marks and he did. He would just be flying around these huge turns and I could see him just gripping the steering wheel so tight and just hanging on to the thing.
The horse jumping was also cool for the reason it’s so silent on the field and then all of a sudden you have this huge animal jumping right next to you. The horse would just gradually trot to the fence and then all of a sudden, woosh he is flying in the air.
It was all really fun and I had a blast working with such a diverse amount of people and I am really grateful Sigma picked me for this shoot.
Very cool, thanks so much for this and where can people see your work from this shoot and more
You can find me at Jackenglish.com and for all Sigma camera gear there website is Sigmaphoto.com
Everyone Has A Surf Coach
If they can afford one. There pretty pricey these days, and some notable WCT surfers have had to cut there surf coaches just on financial difficulties they are having. Here are some notable coaches (that we have seen):
-Andy King with Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith and Adriano De Souza
-Shane Beschen with Evan Geiselman and Kolohe Andino
-Gee Smith (Jordy’s Dad) with Jordy
-Brad Gerlach with Luke Stedman and Conner Coffin
-Chris Gallahger with Cj and Damien Hobgood, Pat, Tanner and Dane Gudauskas
-Ian Cairns with Gabe Kling, Brett Simpson, Nat Young, Andrew Doheny, Tanner Gudauskas
We have never really seen anyone working with Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds, or Taj Burrow. I would assume by a certain age you should have it down as to when your Kolohe’s age (young) where your starting out, you want to learn from other people’s mistakes.

When Getting Snaked From a Pro Surfer
The WCT surfers travel the world to an array of contest sites in which for some of them have never surfed the wave before. Now does it give them the right to drop in on other non-competing surfers while they are “practicing” before there contest begins? We think the surfers would be happy if there was a practice session where they closed the area to only competing surfers so they can warm up and get use to the wave, but this is yet to happen.
It’s a tough situation for these guy’s. They have traveled from around the world and there job is somewhat on the line when they do these contest. Sponsors are breathing down there neck’s for them to make it to the final (or at least stay on tour). Keep in mind the pro’s are only in town for around 2 weeks out of the year, so we are leaning a little more on there side.
Heck, if someone is to drop in one of us we would rather have it done by one of the best surfers in the world therefore we could learn a thing or two from watching them.
