Homemade Water Housing
Jay Lafferty from San Diego sent us a few photos of a water housing he made for his Canon 30D in which he used a pvc cap as the brunt of the housing.
Jay writes:
So why did I built my own water housing when there are quite a few housing companies that already make really radical housings? Because they are really f***ing expensive, and I’m too cheap to dish out that much cash for one. But I do love surf photography, and I knew if I ever wanted to shoot again in this lifetime, I would have to make one on my own. So I did, and I’m glad I did, but make no mistake, this was a pain in the ass to build.
Build Time: Part-time for a week or so. There is a lot of drying & curing time needed.
Tools: Power Drill, Jig Saw, Hack-Saw, Sauder Gun with Sauder Wire, 1 ¼” Bore Bit, assorted other
Drill Bits, two C-Clamps, and maybe a few random tools from the tool box.
Parts List:
6” PVC end-cap / sheet of rubber gasket (hand cut to size later) / one piece of 1 ¼” PVC pipe / eight (24 #8) stainless nuts /eight 1 ½” stainless machined bolts / one 1” PVC elbow / one 1 ¼” PVC end-cap / one 1 ¼” PVC female (smooth) to male (with thread ends) / one push button electrical switch & some speaker wire ( get both at Radio Shack) / your cameras accessory cable / two ½” sheets of plexi-glass (cut to 9”x9”) / 6 pack of super glue / tube of clear silicone / one tube of “Quick-Set”2 part epoxy (mixes clear) / about 3 or 4 tubes of “Marine” 2 part epoxy (mixes white) / 1 can of enamel spray paint / 1 can of foam sealant / about a square foot of squishy packing foam
The only part I didn’t make, or buy off the shelf is the bubble-port. I cut that off my old housing. I’ve heard you can buy bubble-ports, not sure of the cost.
The Biggest Bidding War In Surfing History
Your first thought would say Kelly Slater, correct? Well it’s not Kelly but 20 year old John John Florence who’s contract is up with O’Neill. John John has ridden for O’Neill since he was 6. The current bid began at $3 million a year and has now reached closer to $4 million. “I think if you get paid that and people are willing to pay you that, then that’s what you’re worth,” says Pat O’Connell who is the marketing and team manager at Hurley.
Who is bidding for John John?
Quiksilver, nope they have Kelly and Dane
O’Neill, nope they have Jordy
Rip Curl, nope they have Mick, Owen, and Wilko
Billabong, nope they have Taj and Joel
We have heard it’s between Hurley and Vans
Kelly Slater was the first surfer who truly needed an agent early into his surfing career. If your a surfer making (or worth making) over $200,000 a year then we would think you deserve an agent. Since the trend of having an agent has caught on the surfers are now making the calls instead of the brands.
In other John John news he is no longer represented by Blair Marlin of the Wasserman Group, but has joined Terry Hardy who also represents Kelly Slater.
