Billabong’s 13th Annual Cosmic Creek Surf Contest

Hardly just another contest, the 13th Annual Cosmic Creek is a retro-style event that harkens back to the more alternative times and styles of the 1970′s & 80′s. An era where single-fins and twines resigned supreme and the best surfers in the world proudly sported super short inseams and hair more feathered than Farrah Fawcett. This years event will be on September 8-9th at Salt Creek beach in Dana Point.

Year after Year Cosmic brings out the stars; Dave Rastavich , Tyler Warren, Chris Del Morro, Rob Machado, Tom Curren and the ever present Donavon Frankenreiter. They’ve all made their mark riding the most unusual and forgotten surfboard shapes of decade past. What you ride in you heat comes down to the luck of the draw. With everything from Ben Alpa Stingers to MR twin fins on offer, its anybody’s game.

To close out the Cosmic Creek weekend, Donavon Frankenrieter will host a FREE concert immediately following the contest award ceremony. Set in the natural amphitheater of Salt Creek Beach Park, attendees are encouraged to layout blankets bring lawn chairs, and enjoy Donavon’s soulful tunes as the sun sets over the ocean.

The contest is open to the public; to enter the even, download an entry form and take it signed with payment to Hobie Dana Point to Killer Dana surf shops.

Put Your Body On A Boogie

Do you remember that tune that was used in the Morey Boogie Bodyboard commercials back in the day, “put your body on a boogie, a slick bottom boogie”. As we were in Spots Authority today and there it was the most famous bodyboard from the 80′s the Mach 7 (was actually called the Mach 7-7 in the 80′s). It definitely put a smile on our face along with so many great memories.

How To Become A Professional Photographer

Question:
Hey jack! Im (name removed), I’ve been wanting to become a profetional
photographer for quite some time, just like your self. Could you help
me out with any tips on how i should step into the game?

THANK YOU ENGLISH!

Answer:
I am assuming you want to be a professional surf photographer? To get into the surfing photography world is really quite easy. Show up to the beach and shoot the surfers. If surfing isn’t your thing then whatever it is just throw yourself into that industry and surround yourself with those people and or things. To make a full time living at photography is really difficult these days so I would suggest a second job to pay your bills. Best of luck – Jack

It’s 40 to 50 Feet

No ma’am, it’s more like 8-10 feet! Standing on the beach at The Wedge listening to people’s comments is pretty hysterical, as one lady insisted the surf was 40-50 feet.

The following photos were all taken yesterday from around 7-10 in the morning.
