3 Men Arrested In Drug Smuggling – Carlsbad

6:30 this morning as we we’re doing our normal surf check after are stop off at the local coffee shop we came upon a scene of news reporters on the beach between Warm Waters and Tamarack in Carlsbad. Our first thoughts we’re human trafficking. If this was the case why had they chosen Carlsbad to beach themselves being this is close to 50 miles north of the border.

Around 1:30 a.m. 3 men; Mexican national, US citizen and a Nicaraguan national we’re arrested for smuggling 19 bundles (1,500 pounds) of marijuana valued over $800,000.00. The border patrol was waiting on the shore where they spotted the ponga boat approaching the coastline. There were two men in the boat and one man was waiting in the getaway car.

The boat

The truck in the middle was initially trying to tow the boat up the beach, but then got stuck and another truck was sent in to tow both the truck and the boat ashore

These are the fuel tanks found on board the boat. With that much fuel on board these guys we’re planning a long trip north

News reporter vans fighting for position

Being it was 6:30 in the morning when we got onto the scene as this news team had been there for over an hour. We we’re thinking do they just sit at the news station waiting for a story to break and then race out to cover it or do they get to go home and go from there
