Nike Pulls Out Of The Surf Industry
As fast as Nike has came into the surfing world they have now exited. Nike action will now continue to only focus on skateboarding and snowboarding.
So what does this mean for the surfers who ride for Nike? After December 31, 2012 they will all be riding for Hurley, who is owned by Nike. This includes surfers Carissa Moore, Lakey Peterson and Laura Enever.
The following surfers who will be riding for Hurley
Kolohe Andino (signed a 10 year contract with Nike last year)
Michel Bourez
Nat Young
Alejo Muniz
Julian Wilson (signed a 5 year contract with Nike 2 years ago)
Nike And Hurley No Longer Involved With The US Open
Two banners you will not be seeing in 2013 and beyond as Nike and Hurley have ended there sponsorship with the largest surfing event in the world, the US Open in Huntington Beach. Major thanks to Nike and Hurley for these past years of making the US Open such a great event. Let’s just hope there is a company out there that can afford and wants to keep the US Open going.
NIKE US OPEN OF SURFING AIRS ON NBC
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Host extraordinaire Sal Masekela will be the voice of the 2012 Nike US Open of Surfing this Saturday, September 15 on NBC (1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT), as part of the Red Bull Signature Series. NBC chronicles what was a historic week of surfing, culminating with a showdown on national television with tens of thousands of onlookers on hand at the 14-acre stretch of sand on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier. Competing athletes on the men’s side include Julian Wilson, Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina; the women’s bracket includes Lakey Peterson, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore.
“The Nike US Open is the biggest stage in competitive surfing, and I’m excited a national NBC audience will get to see the world’s best athletes come together to vie for one of the most prestigious titles in the sport,” said Carissa Moore, 2011 Women’s World Champion.

Knife Carrying Surfer Charles Martin Gets Dropped From Nike
ASP rated surfer Charles Martin from Guadaloupe in the Caribbean who is currently ranked 119th on the world tour has just been dropped from his main clothing sponsor Nike.
Charles was arrested in the UK when he and his friends had been attacked at a party and once Charles came back to his hotel room and noticed one of his friends missing he then went back out armed with a serrated knife. Charles was then attacked (again) from a mob group ranging from 10 to 15 people, but he stated the knife stayed in his pocket during this attack. Once back to the hotel he was met by the local police.
Local sheriff Andrew Berry stated Charles would not face any jail time, but will have to pay a fine of $800USD along with unpaid community work
Nike statement: “Nike has ended its sponsorship of Charles Martin as a result of his recent conviction. We have no further comment.”
